Insect Sex Part 2: Collembola (Springtails)

Insects are an incredibly diverse group of animals with an equally diverse set of strategies for making babies. This is part two of a short series of shows where we bring you the stories of some of these reproductive strategies. You’ll hear about death and violence, seductive dances, cross-dressing, bizarre gender roles, and more. Technically, springtails are not actually insects, but they are the next closest thing.

We won’t be talking about human sex or making any off-color jokes, but if you think that you or your kids would not want to hear scientific words about sexual organs and acts, then maybe you shouldn’t listen to this show.

The Guatemalan immigrant story is coming, as soon as the KTRU computer starts cooperating. My apologies for the delay, especially to the gentleman who called last Friday asking if we were going to play the story a little while after it aired. You made my day for wanting to hear it!

Coming up this season...

The goal is to have the show back on air this Friday, yay! Get ready for a great season (and, sadly, possibly the last…we haven’t been able to recruit a News Director for next year).

Here’s what we have planned so far:

—Guatemalan illegal immigrants’ stories

—a big feature on OwlCon, Rice’s huge gaming convention (hopefully yours truly will get to LARP and tell you all about it!)

—the story of a summer in Mongolia

—more science!

Finally, I’m really hoping that we’ll be able to have some sort of radio diary from a Rice student going on the Equality Ride, a group that’s going to hold forums on LGBT rights at religious universities.

By the way, we welcome story ideas, comments, questions, whatever! We’d love to hear from you.

College Student Health

Does anyone have time for themselves anymore? For many college students, the answer is no. When there is that big English paper to finish, that pirate-themed party to attend, and then a birthday party with the girlfriends, something has to give. Students end up sacrificing their health and sleep to fit everything into their schedules. Reporting for Rice’s Radio Journalism class, Jenny gives us the perspectives from students at Rice University.
